For 33 years the extensive coalfields of Warwickshire had been free from serious disaster. Tragically this impressive record was marred by a calamity that took place at the Exhall Colliery in the early hours of 21st. September 1915. The lives of all 375 men working underground thta night were put at risk. As the evnts unfolded 14 of those men lost their lives.
Based loosely on the inquest into those deaths and other accounts from that time, The Price of Coal sets out to show the dangers associated with this once vital industry, the daily risks that the miners took to hew the coal from the ground and goes on to recall the brotherhood and community spirit that was part of those who shared that common purpose.
Today, more than 100 years after the tragedy, the coal mining has gone. But the community and their memory of those events still go on. This play sets out to honour those 14 men and all who once were willing to expose themselves daily to those dangers so that others could have light, heat and somewhere safer to work.
